Wyze Cam Not Recording Events

Quick Fix

Since you are here, I can assume your Wyze Cam is not recording events. If thats the case, try a soft reset, update firmware, and check the internet connection. Enable motion detection, adjust sensitivity, and turn off detection zones if necessary. Shorten cooldown periods and review recording schedules. If issues persist, factory reset or contact Wyze support.

Many users experience this issue, but it’s often easily fixable.

This guide will walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to get your Wyze Cam back to monitoring your home effectively.

Why is My Wyze Camera Not Recording Events?

Before jumping to solutions, it is vital to know what is causing your Wyze cams not to record important events.

According to my research, there are several reasons why isn’t my Wyze camera recording events:

  • Outdated Firmware: Outdated firmware may prohibit Wyze cameras from capturing events because it prevents the camera from communicating with Wyze servers.
  • Weak Internet: If your internet connection is weak or unstable, the camera may not be able to communicate effectively with the Wyze servers, which can lead to failure in event recording.
  • Full Storage: The SD card inside your camera may have reached maximum storage capacity.
  • Low Battery: The low battery of Wyze cams also prevents it from recording events to save battery.
  • Low Detection Sensitivity: The camera may fail to begin events recording if the detection sensitivity is set too low.
  • Misconfigured Cam: If your camera is allocated in the wrong location or misconfigured, it may not be able to detect or record events correctly.

These are the most common issues that stop the event recording feature of your Wyze devices. Fortunately, I have discovered solutions for each of these issues!

Let’s have a deep dive!

1. Soft Reset your Wyze Device

A soft reset can resolve temporary glitches by clearing the camera’s memory without losing settings.

Unplug all of your Wyze cams from the power
  • Unplug your Wyze cam from the power source.
  • For wireless cameras such as the Wyze outdoor cam:
    • Open the charging cover.
    • Flip the power switch to the OFF position.
  • Wait for at least 30 seconds to drain the charge from the capacitors.
  • Reconnect your Wyze cam to the power source or, for wireless models, turn the power switch back to the ON position.

In case the cameras are out of reach, you can also try a simple restart using the Wyze mobile application:

  1. Open the Wyze app on your phone.
  2. Tap the Wyze Device tab.
  3. Tap on the Settings gear icon in the top right corner.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom, and you will find the Restart button. Tap on it!
Restart using the Wyze mobile application:

This technique often resolves common issues with Wyze devices, and the event recording feature will function again.

2. Update the Firmware

As I have mentioned earlier, if your Wyze camera is not up-to-date, it will cause numerous issues. It may also be highly vulnerable to hacking.

So, here are the steps you need to do in the Wyze app to update your device:

Steps you need to do in the Wyze app to update your device.
  1. Open the Wyze app and tap on the Account icon.
  2. Scroll to ‘Device List.’
  3. Choose your camera and tap ‘Update’ if available.

IMPORTANT

If your Wyze device doesn’t have the Update button, it means the firmware is up to date. When you update your Cam, any accessories you have attached to it will also be updated.

For detailed instructions, refer to the official Wyze firmware update guide.

If your Wyze cam is not recording events after the update, there is a chance of internal bugs, and you might have to perform a full factory reset! We have discussed how to do that in the down below.

3. Soft Reset your Internet Router

Just like you performed a soft reset on the camera in the first method, you can also try resetting your router if your internet is having issues because an unstable connection can prevent your camera from continuously recording.

The process of performing the soft reset is exactly the same:

Soft Reset your Internet Router
  1. Unplug your router from the wall socket.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds while it is unplugged.
  3. Release the power button and leave the router for a few minutes.
  4. After that, plug it back in and ensure your Internet connection is fixed.

If this troubleshooting fixes your Internet, you are good to go, but if not, try contacting your Internet service provider.

If you are using Spectrum or Xfinity Internet Service, we have written detailed guides on fixing slow Internet from these services.

4. Toggle Event Recording

Due to occasional bugs, the Wyze app may fail to apply settings to linked devices correctly. There is a possibility that the camera’s event recording setting is either off or incorrectly configured.

In that case, all you have to do is to disable and re-enable the Event recording function!

Disable and re-enable the Event recording function of Wyze cam
  1. Open the Wyze mobile application.
  2. Tap on the Wyze Camera you want to apply this function on.
  3. Tap on the setting gear icon in the top-right corner of the app.
  4. Find the Detect Motion option, and you will find a small toggle button next to it.
  5. First, toggle it to turn off the function and then re-enable it by toggling it back.

Once you do that, your camera will start detecting any motion in front of it.

Test it yourself by moving your hand or an object in front of the camera. You can also enable sound detection to make it record even more events.

5. Adjust Motion Sensitivity

There is also a possibility that you have set the motion sensor sensitivity way too low to detect any movement. You have to adjust the sensitivity manually.

Follow these guidelines:

Increase Wyze cam Motion Detection Sensitivity
  1. Open up the Wyze Application on your phone.
  2. Select the Wyze camera with issues, and tap the settings gear icon.
  3. Tap on the Detection Settings.
  4. You can drag the slider to adjust the sensitivity to your liking.

IMPORTANT

While you can adjust the sensitivity to the highest setting, it will record every movement as an event, which can quickly fill up your SD card. To avoid this, I recommend setting the sensitivity to medium.

6. Turn Off Detection Zones

Wyze devices have a history of detecting zone difficulties. They’ve been wrong for a while, but fixing them is easy unless the hardware is broken.

Wyze’s trigger detection system may be trained on a specific area inside the frame using the detection zone function. On the other hand, it may muck up the event logs by missing certain items or situations entirely.

As a result, you should probably turn off this function when dealing with situations like the one at hand.

To turn off the Wyze device’s detection zone, follow this step-by-step procedure:

Disable the Wyze device's detection zone
  1. Open the Wyze application.
  2. Select your Wyze Camera.
  3. Tap on the Setting Gear icon.
  4. Scroll down to Detection Settings.
  5. Tap on the Detection Zone and toggle it OFF.

That is it! Your camera will not have a specific detection zone, and the motion detector will work to its fullest!

7. Review Recording Schedule

Recording schedules allow you to control when the system begins and ends recording events precisely. The whole procedure of capturing events might be jeopardized by a single mistake with this specific option.

If you leave your Wyze gadget on all day, it will automatically save you from the hassle. Yes! (fingers crossed!)

NOTE

According to Wyze Knowledge Support, The Event Recording Schedule feature is only available on Wyze V1, V2, and Panv1 cameras.

Here’s how to use the Wyze app to review and modify the Event Recording Schedule:

Review and modify the Event Recording Schedule
  1. Open the Wyze mobile application.
  2. Select the Wyze cam you want to set the schedule on.
  3. Tap on Event Recording.
  4. Tap on Schedule.
  5. Select your Recording Schedule; I have set mine to “All Day.”

8. Check Event Recording Rules

Your Event recording DOs and DON’Ts are set by your rule lists. The recording time, sensor activation, alarm volume, etc., may all be governed by the rules you define.

The motion detector may be disabled, though, by following a single rule, ‘Turn OFF Motion Detection.’ It is essential to watch for motion detection since, as you probably know, there can be no motion-triggered event recordings without it.

Be cautious of the ‘Turn OFF the camera’ rule. If this rule is active, it will shut down your camera. Make sure this rule is always turned off to avoid interruptions in recording.

Be cautious of the rule labeled ‘Turn OFF the camera,’ as activating this rule will power down your camera. Ensure this rule is always deactivated to maintain continuous operation.

Follow these guidelines to turn off these rules:

  1. Open the Wyze app and tap on Home.
  2. Tap on the Pencil icon in the top right corner
  3. Tap on Edit Rules.
  4. You will be shown a list of rules. From that list, ensure that the “Turn OFF Motion Detection” and “Turn OFF the Camera” rules are disabled.

That is it. Hopefully, you will successfully turn off these dubious rules.

9. Reduce Cooldown Time

Wyze has made it possible to set a cooldown period in between event recordings to ensure accurate event recognition rather than just triggering alarms.

As a Wyze Cam Plus customer, one of the few privileges is setting the cooldown duration to any value from 0 to 5 minutes. There will be a necessary 5-minute cool-down if you do not have the premium membership.

In a few instances, resolving issues with event recording was as simple as shortening the cooldown period.

If you have Wyze Cam Plus, try reducing the cooldown period to 1 minute and see if it fixes the problem. Follow these guidelines to do so:

Try reducing the cooldown period to 1 minute
  1. Open the Wyze app on your phone and select the camera.
  2. Click on the Settings gear icon.
  3. Go to Event Recording.
  4. Go to Recording Cooldown.
  5. Set the timer to 1 minute.

Your device cool-down timer will be set to 1 minute, which is healthy!

IMPORTANT

Setting your cooldown timer this low will surely increase the number of recorded events but will surely cover up your cloud storage quickly. However, your card storage can fill the gap and become handy to cover up the extra storage.

10. Factory Reset the Wyze Camera

If none of these solutions worked, you might try factory resetting your Wyze device to factory settings as a final resort.

CAUTION

Factory resetting your Wyze device will delete all its settings and bring it back to a black state. You will have to customize all the settings on that specific camera to your liking again.

A factory reset will also delete any unwanted software or data that may have contributed to this issue.

Here are the steps to factory resetting your Wyze device via the app:

  1. Remove the camera from the mobile app by selecting the camera you want to remove > Tap on the Settings gear icon > Device Setting > Delete Device > Tap Yes.
  2. Remove the memory card from the camera and press and hold the reset button until the camera’s LED indicator blinks yellow around 10 to 15 seconds later.
  3. Unplug it from the wall outlet when the yellow light blinks, then wait 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect it after the 15-second delay.
  5. You should reinsert the memory card into the camera.
  6. Finally, re-add the camera in the Wyze app.

For persistent error codes like Wyze Error Code 90, a factory reset of your Wyze cam may be the answer.

11. Contact Wyze Customer Support

If you are still facing the issue even after hard resetting the camera, then my friend, there is no option but to contact Wyze customer care.

They will either repair your cam for you or send you a new one if yours is under warranty.
